5 Tips to Promote Your Next Event on Instagram

Nothing’s worse then going through the hassle of planning an event, only to have a handful of people show up. Being able to plan, promote, and execute an event takes time and patience. This is exactly why I wrote this article, to help people looking to pack their events. I feel as though I am in liberty to write this article seeing as though I have been throwing events since college (2012) and this past year alone I have done roughly 12 events in Washington, DC. Seeing as though my target demographic is primarily on Instagram, this is where I have achieved the most success. So without further adieu, here are my top 5 tips to promote your event on Instagram.

Instagram destroys every other platform in terms of engagement on every level. With 800 million active users- Instagram has the potential to help you take your event to the next level.

 

1. Maximize that bio 

One of the most valuable pieces of real estate on Instagram is the link in bio. I recommend using Eventbrite to create a visual landing page for your guests. Make sure your Eventbrite (landing page)  is attractive, interesting and on point with your objectives. One of the major benefits of using an app like Eventbrite is the ability to sync all your attendees to an email list, and target them in later campaigns such as survey or promotion for your next event. Once your link is created throw it in the link in your bio and use it as a Call to Action for your posts.

Secret Ninja Tip An obvious yet overlooked technique is to put your event and the date in the bio. 

 

2. Utilize IG Stories

Instagram stories is a great tool to engage with your future event goers. Recently Instagram has included the opportunity for stories to be featured in the explore page. This along with some rising trends in story views from my personal accounts, it can be fair to say that Instagram is placing an emphasis on the feature. A few ways you can get the most out of your stories are the following:

    1. Countdown feature is a great way to build anticipation for your event.
    2. Behind the Scenes (BTS) in preparation for event
    3. Tools like Later help you to schedule posts and stories.

 

Don’t wait to the last minute to schedule your posts. Chances are you have a life outside of Social Media.I typically pick a day like Sunday to schedule all my content for the Week.

3. Get creative with Posts

Please, please please. Don’t JUST post the standard flyers. While they are often times great visual representation for the event, if that’s all your posting you may want to reconsider the following: They don’t call it “Social Media” for no reason. One of the best ways to build traction and raise ticket sales is to actively engage and interact with your audience. to do what Gary Vaynerchuck calls the 1.80 strategy-which is essentially going in and leaving thoughtful comments on a specific group of people’s photos.  Another surefire way to build  engagement with your audience is to run contests. Now, a quality contest with contain all of the following ingredients.

        1. Use a branded hashtag
        2. Give a relevant prize
        3. Make it easy to enter

4. Influencer Marketing in your location

Influencer marketing may be one of the most underutilized but highly effective tactics on all of Social Media. Simply put Wikipedia defines Influencer Marketing as endorsements from influencers, people and organizations who have expert knowledge and social influence in a respective field. It is your job as a marketer and event planner to make sure you have a thought out strategy that not only makes sure you win, but also the influencer and their audience a well. Start by making a list of people in both your industry and area who have between 10K and 50K followers. Offer them a free ticket or an opportunity to be a sponsor for your event, in exchange for a discount code for their audience. 5. Run Insta Ads through FB Business Manager

It’s no secret Social Media is what they call “Pay to Play”. Meaning, if you really want to reach the most people potentially possible you are going to need to head over to Facebook Business manager and create some advertisements. Now I won’t be breaking down the ins and out on how to do this (in this article) however, I will tell you a bit more about the benefits of running ads on Instagram Ads.


As mentioned at the beginning of this article, Instagram has the highest engagement of any platform out there. Also, the minds behind Instagram have made it easy to convert you audience. As long as you content is visually appealing- you can almost guarantee a positive ROI with a successful IG ads. All in all, Instagram’s sponsored posts are a fantastic way to get more reach, build your followers, and establish brand awareness.
